May 4, 2008 L.A. Pierce College
Pierce College's Farm Walk serves as an open house of it's Agriculture Department programs and it's unique 200 acre teaching farm laboratory. Pierce College opened it's doors in 1947 as a school of agriculture. Pierce still maintains pasture land to support small herds of cattle, sheep, and goats, poultry and horses used in training future agriculture and veterinary leaders.
We would like
to thank the 4-5,000 visitors and participants who came to support our
laboratory; Pierce College custodial staff, electricians, Pierce
College Theater Arts Department, Pierce College Foundation, L.A.
County Sheriff Department, Los Angeles City Fire Department, Los
Angeles County Fire Department Forestry Division, Northridge Kiwanis
Club, Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis P. Zine, Dairy Council
of California, Veterinary Centers of America, Los Angeles Department of
Animal Regulations, Animal Encounters Inc., Southern
California Rare Fruit Growers, Simply Marie and her Canyon
Country Cowboys Band and the several hundred agriculture students who
prepared, organized and ran the event. The department is especially
grateful to student team leaders Lu Dao, Mike Hamik, Corinne Leighty,
Ataki Wilson, Glenda Freiwald and Sonia Figueroa who coordinated
our working teams
to prepare our laboratory for our animals and for our visitors.
A special thanks to our college president, Bob Garber, assistant vice-president Larry Kraus, dean Carol Kozeracki and Foundation President Dennis Washburn for their continued support, encouragement and guidance in saving and improving our farm laboratory.
We hope our new agriculture facilities will be ready for use before Farm Walk 2009.
Appreciatively,
Pierce Agriculture Department
