The Pierce College Pre-Veterinary Program owes its unmatched
success rate largely due to its hands-on approach in teaching using
Pierce's 200
acre farm laboratory. At the end
of March 2007, one Hundred and twenty eight
of Pierce's students had already been accepted
into graduate schools of veterinary medicine. Pierce has an excellent
teaching staff. Pierce attracts students from all over the country
because of its teaching farm laboratory. Many of our students have
already
completed courses and degrees at UCLA, USC, Dartmouth, Yale, and other
highly rated universities. They come
to Pierce primarily due to the hands-on approach of our farm
laboratory. There is a growing shortage of large-animal
veterinarians across the country. Farm organizations and
agriculture experts claim the problem could affect the nation's ability
to handle outbreaks of catastrophic animal diseases and will thus
affect our ability to maintain a healthy supply of food for our nation.
Of more than 71,000 vets in the country in 2004, only
22% (16,000)
-- treated large farm animals such as cattle, pigs and sheep at least
some of the time. In 1986, nearly half of more than 32,000 vets
provided at least part-time large animal care. The Pierce
College farm has
been very successful in preparing our students to enter the veterinary
field - capable of handling livestock, equine and companion animals.
This year (2005) eighteen of our students applied to graduate schools of veterinary medicine and ALL 18 have been admitted into graduate schools of veterinary medicine. Congratulations to all of you. Pierce honors your achievement and respects your hard work and determination to succeed.
