History of Veterinary Science
The first major veterinary college, the New
York College of
Veterinary Surgeons, was incorporated on April
7, 1857,
although it did not go into full operation
until 1865. The
college, offered courses in histology,
anatomy, physiology,
theory and practice, surgical pathology and
operative surgery. Today,
the college is accredited by the American
Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA),
which has 64,000 members throughout the United
States. The goals
of AVMA are to improve the quality of
veterinary service, support
the humane treatment of animals and offer
continuing education to
veterinarians. Pierce College started as a
school of agriculture in 1947. Since that
time, Pierce has broadened its scope of
disciplines. Pierce is credited with the highest transfer
rate of community colleges into the University
of California. Pierce also has the only two
year degree program in veterinary sciences and
the highest transfer rate of any two year
school in California into schools of
veterinary medicine.
